A primary school teacher is set to appear in the Upington Magistrate’s Court on Monday, charged with se_xually assaulting a minor girl. The 28-year-old woman was arrested on Friday, Netwerk24 reported.
Police spokesperson Captain Jacques September said she faces charges of rape, molestation, indecent se_xual assault and serious assault of a minor. The Northern Cape education department’s Geoffrey van der Merwe said in a statement on Sunday that the Laerskool Oranje-noord teacher was immediately suspended.
“The department and the teaching fraternity are shocked and saddened by the incident,” Van der Merwe said. “Teachers are secondary caregivers to our children and for that reason we condemn these actions in the strongest terms.”
He called upon any other pupils who have experienced s_exual assault at the hands of a teacher to come forward.
Van der Merwe said this kind of behaviour wouldn’t be tolerated.
