Three Zimbabweans killed by crocodile while crossing Limpopo into South Africa

Three Zimbabweans have been attacked and killed by a crocodile while trying to cross the Limpopo river from Zimbabwe into South Africa.

Thousands of Zimbabweans cross the border each year from Zimbabwe into South Africa in January after spending holidays in Zimbabweans. Most of which have no proper documentation.

The incident happened on the 3rd of January. A man, his wife and 4 year old child tried to cross the overflowing river and eyewitnesses say the family was warned not to cross as the current was too strong. When they had walked for about 10 meters, a huge crocodile is said to have attacked the wife and dragged her underwater. The husband, who was holding the child at that moment, lost his footing and dropped the child in the water who struggled to swim. A second crocodile is said to have attacked the husband as he tried to rescue his wife.

Some eye witnesses tried to scare the crocodile away but it was too late as the reptile went underwater with the body. Underwater divers from Messina in South Africa were called to try and retrieve the bodies but had to abandon the search because visibility in the muddy water was heavily restricted.

Authorities encouraged people to take passports and legally cross the border. “There are many dangerous elements when you try to cross the border illegally. Touts patrol the bushes and there have been countless reports of people being mugged and woman ra_ped and some even murdered, ” reported an official.

Names of the deceased could not be released until their next of kin have been notified.
