Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made a shock announcement that has sent the Zimbabwean community into panic mode. The billionaire CEO wrote a lengthy status update highlighting his New Year Resolutions and touched on Zimbabwe.
The down to earth founder of Facebook announced that with effect from 1 February 2017, all Zimbabweans will no longer have access to Facebook. Mark wrote :
“This year I would also like to help the oppressed and I have decided to restrict Facebook access to all Zimbabweans. This not only affects those in Zimbabwe, but everyone whose profile states that they are of Zimbabwean origin. The decision was not an easy on to make but I noticed that for Zimbabweans to bring about change in their country, maybe Facebook is distracting them from standing up and being heard”
The news was met with anger among Zimbabweans and some people were seen changing their nationalities immediately after the news went public.
Mark Zuckerberg went on to announce that facebook would be reinstated to Zimbabweans if one of two conditions are met.
- If the current government is dissolved and a new one if put in place
- If free and fair elections are held
Some political analysts welcomed the news while others said the ruling party Zanu Pf was bigger than Mark Zuckerberg. One Zanu Pf senior member said: “We do not care about this small boy. This is not America”
All Zimbabweans were advised to make a backup of their data on or before 31 January 2017.
“From midnight 31 January, all Zimbabweans will be logged out”, the statement finished off
